Zitkala-Sa (1898)

I wanted to comment on this picture, as it reminded me of the conversation we had in class about the portraits of Zitkala-Sa. Although she is holding a weaved basket, and her hair is loosely clipped the odd posturing and the elegant wallpaper in the background create an almost disturbing combination of Zitkala-Sa's life. She is a Native American, but she also has the power of the English language. It is remarkable that a single picture can show such strength and such sadness.
